Emsculpt Neo® Functional Wellness
Emsculpt Neo® functional wellness uses HIFEM (high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy) and RF (radiofrequency energy) to improve physical function, mobility, and recovery. This application is an adjunctive therapy to medical and rehabilitation plans, focusing on strengthening muscles and treating joints that support everyday movement and stability. The functional wellness protocols of Emsculpt Neo® differ from body sculpting protocols in three important ways:First, there is a shorter pulse duration for muscle contraction. Short pulses induce quick, controlled muscle stimulation without overloading or causing muscle fatigue in the weakened or atrophied muscles after injury, surgery, or prolonged immobilization.Second, there is high-frequency stimulation, which focuses on nerve modulation and retraining neural pathways instead of inducing supramaximal contractions. This action is essential for regaining fine motor control and neuroplasticity.Third, there is low-intensity stimulation to ensure delicate stimulation of weak, atrophied, or injured muscles, which is essential after the acute phase of injury to avoid further damage to muscles.
Clinical studies show that Emsculpt Neo® functional wellness protocols improve tissue, joints, and ligaments, and help produce bone, collagen, and elastin. These benefits allow treatment of arthritis, tight or pulled muscles, tendonitis, and joint pain and stiffness. There are multiple applications for Emsculpt Neo® functional wellness:
Muscle Re-education and Rehabilitation: The treatment uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy to induce thousands of deep, powerful muscle contractions that retrain neuromuscular pathways, which is especially useful after injury or surgery. It helps retrain muscles that have become weakened after surgery, injury, or prolonged inactivity (disuse atrophy). This is often used as an adjunct to physical therapy, helping patients regain control and coordination of their movements.
Core Stability and Posture: By targeting deep stabilizing muscles in the core and pelvis, Emsculpt Neo® helps improve spinal alignment, balance, and posture, which can alleviate chronic back pain and prevent future injuries. Muscle weakness and imbalances contribute to poor posture and increase fall risk, especially in older adults.
Pain Relief and Reduced Spasms: The combination of HIFEM energy and radiofrequency (RF) heating enhances local blood circulation, relaxes tight or overactive muscles, and reduces painful spasms and stiffness.
Increased Range of Motion and Mobility: Strengthening surrounding supportive muscles and reducing stiffness allows for smoother, more fluid movement and increased flexibility.
Prevention of Muscle Atrophy: For individuals with limited mobility due to age, injury, or illness, the treatment can help maintain muscle mass and prevent disuse atrophy (muscle loss).
Support for Rehabilitation: Emsculpt Neo® complements physical therapy and is used in pre-surgical strengthening and post-surgical recovery plans to accelerate the healing process.
Improved Blood Circulation: The intense muscle activation boosts local blood flow, which aids in faster recovery, better tissue health, and can even help prevent blood clots (venous thrombosis) during periods of immobility.
Pelvic Floor Support: The technology can be used to strengthen pelvic stabilizers, which is particularly beneficial for postpartum recovery and addressing issues like urinary incontinence.
In essence, the functional wellness application of Emsculpt Neo® is designed to help patients feel stronger, move better, and enhance their overall quality of life by building a stronger, more resilient foundation.

Patients preparing for or recovering from surgery or injury (pre-hab and rehab).
Seniors experiencing age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia) and seeking to maintain mobility and balance.
Athletes aiming to improve performance, enhance muscle balance, and speed recovery.
Individuals with common injuries such as carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, runner’s knee, or frozen shoulder.
Individuals suffering from the chronic pain and stiffness of arthritis.
Post-cast removal for rehabilitation.

Treatment DetailS
In preparation:
Drink plenty of water before and after your treatments.
Wear loose clothing free of any metal fibres (some underwear contains antimicrobial metal fibres – wear cotton underwear).
Do not apply creams or lotions to skin.
Jewelry, watches, and all metal must be removed before treatment.
Let the technician know if you have any metal implants/surgical hardware.
Sessions: A typical treatment plan involves six sessions, spaced a week apart.
Sensation: The procedure feels warm, and pulsing sensations are experienced. Support muscles undergoing strengthening protocols may feel more intense contractions.
It is generally not described as painful.
Female patients may experience an increase in menstrual flow.
Mild local erythema (redness) in the treatment area may last a few minutes to an hour.
Common QuestionS
-
Your care provider will provide an individual treatment plan based on your assessment. You can expect six treatments for most areas of concern.
-
Soreness is not expected after functional wellness treatment but strength building of certain muscle groups could cause mild soreness for a few days.
-
You can resume normal workouts immediately. Some mild muscle soreness is common but usually subsides within one to two days.
-
Muscle gains are long-lasting but require maintenance through a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise, which can help results last six to twelve months. Maintenance sessions can help preserve results long-term.
-
Best results will be achieved by combining treatment alongside the exercise program advised by your physiotherapy team.
